Mike Tomlin’s spot in Pittsburgh remains safe after an extension this summer, but could the Steelers look to potentially trade him? Adam Schefter of ESPN says that multiple teams are now wondering if they could potentially coax the Steelers into moving Tomlin after a fourth straight loss.
“There are teams out there wondering whether they should about whether the Steelers would be willing to move on from Mike Tomlin and move him to another organization. I don’t think Pittsburgh will do that. That’s not what they’ve been about, and there’s no indication they would. But I do think there are teams wondering whether they should lob in a call to see if they could stir Pittsburgh’s interest,” Schefter said.
With a new contract, the Steelers seem entrenched on the Tomlin train. For the last few offseasons, there have been questions about Tomlin’s future with the Steelers, including last season when it appeared there was speculation he could leave Pittsburgh.
Yet, he re-upped his deal and still has the fire for coaching. With the Steelers having a nearly decade-long playoff drought, however, something needs to change for Tomlin and the Steelers sooner rather than later.
Even with a loss this postseason, Tomlin is not going anywhere, but the Steelers will have to contemplate how much longer they view Tomlin’s tenure with the team as a net positive if the results do not change.
